A Collar Can Make or Break a Tachea

We know that the right accessories can really make an outfit.  But did you know the right accessories can save your dog’s neck?  Veterinarians are doing research all the time and some of the things we thought were ok for pets, is not.  Many times people are using what they learned from the older generations on how to treat a pet or what’s good for them.  It’s understandable it’s hard to keep up with all the changes that seem to be happening daily in every area of life.  If someone suggests something to you, do a little research or ask a trusted pet professional their thoughts on the subject.

Having said all that, let’s dive into some accessories dogs wear.  One thing that every dog has is a flat collar, looks like a belt with a buckle, and it holds their tags as well as information in case they get lost.  The flat collar is a good collar for everyday wear but not the best for walks.  First, you should be able to fit two fingers between your dog’s neck and the collar.  It is too tight otherwise.  For walking if your dog pulls or if you have to pull your dog back the collar can do damage to your dog’s trachea.  A choke collar should never be used, it can tighten and not loosen until you physically pull it loose.  There are other options.

Some people will use a gentle/no pull harness.  When that came out it was so helpful to people who have dogs that pull.  It was designed to clip the leach in the front because you could control the dog that way.  They found that after years of using a gentle/no pull harness dogs gait was off.  It would be as if you wore shoes of different heights all the time, you would eventually have some issues.

Another option people would use especially with dogs that pull is a gentle lead.  This can be a dangerous option if you do not know how to use it correctly or if your dog gets overly excited. If your dog sees something and tries to run, their head can be whipped around from the lead.  They don’t like the feeling on their face so they keep trying to get it off.  Which will make a fun walk not so fun.

One of my favorite options is a harness, a Y shaped harness is the best option.  Having a harness that comes across their chest can be uncomfortable for them to walk.  It may cause them to change their gait which will lead to other problems.  The Y shaped harness will allow freedom of movement and they will walk naturally.  A harness gives you another option to hold your dog if needed.

There are so many options in pet stores and online.  As I always say, check with your vet or a professional pet care provider for some suggestions.  This is not a one size fits all, each dog has their own preferences and body shape that has to be fitted.  When you do find that harness, you and your dog are happy with make sure you get it fitted.  A well fitted harness will help your dog enjoy your walks together.
