Have you ever just sat and watched your pet? It may sound a little creepy but there is a really good reason to do that. Watching your pet you will see the way they walk and if something is off you will know it right away. You may get so good you will notice the slightest change. Then you can keep an eye on it so if you see it get worse or change you can take your pet to the veterinarian. You don’t have to watch every day but get use to the way your pet walks, you may save them some pain.
Keep an eye on your pet’s potty habits. A cat, for example, could get a Urinary Tract Infection which can be fatal in 24 to 48 hours. Knowing your cat’s habits you will know right away if there is a problem and you can get your cat help. Wet Tail in hamsters can be fatal in 24 to 48 hours in a young or stressed out.
Eating is always a tell tale sign something is not right with your pet. Your pet that usually licks their plate now hardly eats at all. Or your pet who doesn’t eat much is now eating and looking for more. These are reasons to call the veterinarian to discuss what you are observing.
Playtime is another area that can give a clue if something is wrong. If your usually playful pet is not trying to engage you in play like they normally do or they are not playing as hard as they usually do, take a step back. It could very well be that it is too hot or cold for them to play. They may have just finished playing with someone else. It could be their nap time or they just got up. Keep an eye on them to see if they are acting like what you have observed,
All of these things are obvious but we are so busy that we don’t always train ourselves to observe. Life has gotten so busy and we don’t always have the time to sit and watch but it could save your pet’s life if you do. Also, if you make a habit out of it you may save someone else’s pet’s life. Another reason it will help you is if you can notice something early you may be able to take care of it quicker and cheaper. No one wants to put a price on a pet’s life but being able to catch something early is better. You can also help the veterinarian figure out what is going on with your pet by letting them know what you have observed from your pet and when it started.
Also there is the fun factor. Sometimes watching your pet run around and be goofy is the medicine for a hard day. Watching them sleep so peacefully can bring peace to you. You can also get a few pets which could lower your blood pressure after a crazy commute. Slowing down to just watch your pet enjoy life, you may actually learn from them.
