Thunderstorms and Firework Season Is Upon Us

It is the most wonderful time of the year if you love thunderstorms and fireworks but for some, especially our little furry friends, it’s a terrifying time of year. For some of us, our pets are absolutely fine with storms and fireworks- they don’t like it because it is startling but they adjust.  For others, our pets are terrified from the moment they think a storm is coming or hear what could be fireworks coming, until hours after it is over.

It is a wonderful thing when you adopt a pet from another part of the country or if you move from one part of the country to another. However, if your pet has never been exposed to fireworks or thunder, or if they have had a scary experience such as being alone when a storm hits or fireworks happen, that will negatively affect them.  Also, some breeds are prone to anxiety and again, no exposure or negative exposure will set them up for some rough nights or days during stormy weather.  Fireworks can be especially scary since it comes out of nowhere; there is no static electricity to give warning.

Can anything be done?  Yes! And you should do something! Some pets have actually had heart attacks and died from the stress. You could try a noise machine (white or brown) to mask the sounds of the thunder or fireworks.  Music, classical or reggae, has been found to be relaxing for animals, but if there is a pause in the music and a crack of thunder hits at the right time, it is scary for your pet. Calming agent, such as Adaptil for dogs or Feliaway for cats to help sooth your pets nerves. These are synthetic pheromone sprays that only your pet will be able to smell. For some pets that may not be enough and you may need to get the help of your veterinarian.  Your veterinarian may prescribe a light sedative, if your pets stress and anxiety is too overwhelming to be controlled through non medicinal measures.  They may even suggest you see a veterinarian behaviorist. (Please do not ever give your pet a sedative that has not been prescribed by the veterinarian.)

The one thing you can always do is comfort your pet.  It is old school thinking that your pet needs to” tough it out” or not to cuddle them because it makes them weak and it will get worse. Your pets look to you for everything- food, water, a place to live and love. They need your love more than ever when they arscared… Plus, showing them love will strengthen your bond. Never hesitate to love on your pets when they need it most!
